Built atop the sacred rock (Foundation Stone) from which Muslim's believe Muhammad ascended to heaven on his night journey, the Dome of the Rock sits on the most contested piece of real estate in the religious world. Jews, Christians, and Muslims all claim connections to the sacred rock.
Judaism reveres the Temple Mount as the sacred location of the 1st & 2nd Temples,where God's divine presence rests (Isaiah 8:18). Ancient rabbinic scholars believed God gathered the primordial dust for the creation of Adam from the Temple Mount, thus positioning the location as the center or 'navel' of the world.
