Description
Dedicated on October 26, 1906, the Illinois Memorial commemorates the 36,325 Illinoisans who served in the Vicksburg Campaign. Sixty bronze tablets record each name on the interior wall of the memorial. Gleaming white during the day, the striations of the memorial's granite and marble cast their subtle tones as the sun sets each day. The gold eagle glistens in the golden tones of sunset. Stone Mountain (GA) granite forms the 47 steps--one for each day of the Siege of Vicksburg--and the memorial base. The Parthenon-inspired memorial atop the base is constructed of Georgia white marble. Perched atop a high point on Union Avenue, the Illinois Memorial stands sixty-two feet tall and is among the iconic structures within Vicksburg National Military Park. Built by the people of Illinois at a cost of $194,423.00, the memorial was entrusted to the United States and the National Park Service.
