Description
Bayon, a Khmer-era temple, stands at the center of Angkor Thom in Cambodia. The iconic imagery of Bayon are its myriad faces. Visitors to Bayon scramble up and down stone steps under the graze of some 200 serene, smiling faces of Lokesvara. The temple was built in the late 12th and early 13th century as the official temple for Mahayana Buddhist King Jayavarman VII.
Bayon is part of the Angkor UNESCO World Heritage Site.
