Description
Driving through southern Pennsylvania, en route to Maryland, I spotted this wonderful old Mail Pouch Tobacco barn. I made a quick U-turn, for a few pictures--with permission from the property owner. Barns, silos, and brick walls across the upper Midwest and Northeast once advertised a host of products, including Mail Pouch Tobacco. Over 20,000 barns advertised the popular chewing tobacco at the height of the painted barn/wall advertising campaign (1890 to 1992). Mail Pouch Tobacco Barns appeared across 22 states. Today, Mail Pouch Barns are still found in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, Tennessee, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and California. Ghost sign enthusiasts 'barn storm' the country looking for remaining Mail Pouch barns.
