Description
Established in 1769 by Franciscan missionary Junipero Serra, San Diego de Alcala stands as California's first church. Serra envisioned a chain of missions running up the Pacific coast. The combination of missions (21 Roman Catholic missions organized in the late-18th) and presidios spaced along the Pacific coast from San Diego to Carmel and on to Sonoma anchored Spain's claim to the region. The missions anchored El Camino Real (The Royal Road). Today, tourists and pilgrims can follow California's Historic Mission Trail up the Pacific coast from San Diego to Sonoma.
Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala is an active parish serving the spiritual needs of parishioners, pilgrims, and seekers. The historic sanctuary--restored in 1931 to its appearance in 1813--opens her doors daily for visitors, private prayer and public worship.
