Description
The Appalachian Trail stretches over 2100 miles from Georgia to Maine, attracting hiking enthusiasts from around the globe. Backpackers, solitary or groups, descend upon the trail each hiking season to challenge mind and body in completing the journey. The scenic trail traverses Newfound Gap Road (US 441) inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park at the Tennessee/North Carolina state line--a popular photo stop for through hikers. From Newfound Gap the end of the trail awaits 1,972.0 miles at Katahdin, Maine. For the less adventurous traveler a tranquil stroll along the Appalachian Trail awaits at Newfound Gap. To the north 4.0 miles sits Charlies Bunion--a picturesque rock outcropping along the trail. To the south a few miles is Clingmans Dome and its iconic viewing tower. At the NewFound Gap parking area is the Rockefeller Memorial, a tribute to the $5 million gift from the Rockefeller Foundation that made the creation of the GSMNP a reality by allowing the purchase of remaining land for the park.
Stephen Stookey captured the image used to create this 'autumn-feel' digital painting with his Canon 5D Mark III and Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens.
