Artist's Description

A remnant of the Cold War, Fallout Shelters portended a safe haven in case of nuclear attack. Most Cold War era shelters were decommissioned following the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union. Aging Fallout Shelter signs still dot the American urban landscape.

Sioux Falls (South Dakota) Civil Defense moved quickly to establish a network of Fallout Shelter's during the atomic war scare of the early 1960s. This sign still hangs on the front of the Sioux Falls Food Pantry building on N. Phillips Avenue, near 5th and Phillips Avenue. Capacity is 600 persons.

Image captured with a Canon 5D Mark III & Canon 70-200 f/4L IS USM lens.

For a contemporary, yet nostalgic feel, I recommend a metal print of this iconic image of the Cold War. For a modern spin on this iconic image, I recommend the acrylic print with aluminum posts or canvas. The standard Fallout Shelter sign size was 10 x 14.

About Stephen Stookey

Stephen Stookey

Stephen Stookey, Ph.D., is a university dean/church history professor/ordained minister by day and photographer by night. Well, not just nighttime; you get the picture. Now with Canon equipment in hand, Stephen captures visual stories from locations of natural beauty, historical importance, and spiritual significance. His images appear in publications and Hollywood productions and hang on the walls of businesses, homes, and high-end hotels. Stephen operates Stephen Stookey Photography, an online print on demand business. Thank you for taking time to view my portfolio.
