Description
There is little wonder why Northern Plains Indians and indigenous peoples attached sacred wonder to Devils Tower. The tower and eastern Wyoming landscape is majestic, evoking a sense of awe and wonder. President Teddy Roosevelt designated Devils Tower as the United States first National Monument in 1906. The hike around the tower's base offers unique views of this geologic feature. Devils Tower rises 1,267 feet above the Belle Fourche River and the surrounding Black Hills prairie. The 867 foot rise from base to summit attracts climbers seeking world class crack climbing routes.
Devils Tower was ensconced in American pop culture in Stephen Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977).
I love how this composition captures the beauty of Devils Tower and its surrounding landscape.
