Description
The iconic El Cortez stands atop the crest of San Diego's Cortez Hill; its red neon sign a familiar sight. Opened in 1927 and restored to its former glory in 1990, the Spanish renaissance revival tower graces the San Diego cityscape. For several decades the El Cortez stood as the tallest building in San Diego. In 1950 the iconic hotel debuted the nation's first exterior glass elevator. Its Don Room is a popular wedding reception location, offering a beautiful view across the city. The landmark Spanish Colonial Revival building was added to the National Register of Historical places in 2002.
