Artist's Description

Kirtland Temple, initially referred to BY Joseph Smith and his followers as the "Lord's House,' was dedicated in 1836. It was the first Mormon temple built. The Kirkland Temple sits on bluff above the Chagrin Valley, 25 miles east of Cleveland, OH. Armed guards protected the construction site from local opposed to the presence of Joseph Smith & his followers. Smith announced plans fro a Temple in December of 1832. Construction ran from June of 1833 until dedication In March of 1836.

Smith and his followers abandoned Kirtland just two years after the completion of the Temple, settling in Nauvoo, IL. Locals used the abandoned structure for community events, housing livestock, and, for a time a public school. The Community of Christ (formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) assumed ownership of the Kirkland Temple in 1880.
