Description
Texas Dance Halls owe their existence to 19th century immigrant communities who built the original barn-like structures for community events and social functions. Today, the remaining structures continue due to the dogged persistence of local residents committed to the preservation of these cultural treasures. La Bahia Turn Verein Hall, outside Burton, TX, is among a handful of 19th century dance halls still used in the Lone Star State. Nestled among mature live oaks, the large white barn evokes a sense of traditional farm architecture. Windows ringing three walls are opened for ventilation on warm summer evenings. Generations of texans have celebrated life together inside these walls. La Bahia Hall's roots reach back to German settlers who founded the hall in 1879.
