Description
Among the villages that dot the scenic High Road to Taos is Las Trampas. Settled in 1751 by 12 families, Las Trampas is known today for its historic mission church. Built c. 1760, the Spanish colonial style San José de Gracia Church is the central landmark of the old village plaza. Passing through the area in December, at sunset, the historic church was decorated for Christmas with luminaries and a star. A sense of the holy permeated the scene.
San José de Gracia Church is a National Historic Landmark and part of the Las Trampas Historic District, a National Historic Landmark District.
