Description
A symbol of freedom and hope, the Statue of Liberty stands atop Liberty Island in Manhattan's New York Harbor. Designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated in 1886, the statue was a gift from France in celebration of the United States centennial celebration and a symbol of friendship between the two nations. Immigrants arriving in New York via Ellis Island lined the boat to view Lady Liberty, with her torch symbolic of the light of freedom and her tablet inscribed with the date of the Declaration of Independence. She still stands as America's iconic symbol of freedom, hope and opportunity.
The Statue of Liberty, as well as Ellis Island, are now under the care of the National Park Service.
