The iconic Treasury at Petra is the first significant structure awaiting visitors at the conclusion of the 1.5 km hike through the narrow siq. Carved into the rose red canyon wall, the Treasury is popularly identified with the climatic ending of "Indian Jones and the Last Crusade." The mood of The Treasury takes on an other worldly feel during the Petra Nights presentation under the glow of hundreds of candles.
Scholars debate the precise origins of the ancient Nabataean capital--estimates of earliest human settlement reach back to the 8th century BCE. Petra controlled a major caravan trade route, accounting for the multiple cultural influences reflected in the architectural styles. Petra is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site and a prime tourist destination in Jordan.
