Description
Bennington's Old First Church sits at the heart of Vermont's history. First gathered in 1762, Old First Church holds the distinction of being the first Protestant Church established in the Green Mountain State. The current church building dates to 1805, replacing the original church building completed in 1763. The adjacent cemetery is the final resting place of Vermont's early settlers, soldiers from the Battle of Bennington (both sides of the revolutionary War battle), governors, senators, and prominent citizens--including renowned poet Robert Frost. The Vermont legislature accorded the cemetery with the title "Vermont's Sacred Acre" and recognized Old First Church as "Vermont's Colonial Shrine."
The monochrome processing of this fine art photographic image conveys an emotion of reverence within this simple, classic New England 19th century sanctuary.
