Description
Stax Records is synonymous with Southern/Memphis Souls music. Founded in 1959 as Satellite Records by Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton (Jim's sister), the recording label took on its iconic name in 1961, drawing from the first two letters of Jim and Estelle's last names. Stax Records, and its subsidiary Volt Records, quickly established itself as the shaping influence of southern or Memphis-style soul music. Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, the Staples Sisters, Rufus and Carla Thomas, Johnnie Taylor, Albert King, and Stax Records famous house band, Booker T. & the MG's brought Memphis Soul to the nation from the studio inside the old Capitol Theatre, marking Stax and Memphis as Soulsville USA. The Stax/Volt labels produced cutting-edge, gritty soul, funk, jazz, and blues sounds, leaving the studio second to only Motown Records in soul music sales.
Today, the old Stax Records Studio is home to the Stax Museum of American Soul Music.
