Description
Taughannock Falls, near the western shoreline of Cayuga Lake, plunges 215 feet--the highest single drop falls east of the Rocky Mountains. Taughannock Falls' vertical drop tops Niagara Falls by 33 feet. The namesake falls of Taughannock Falls State Park is one of three major waterfalls as Taughannock Creek cuts its way through a gorge, with walls up to 400 feet high, on its way to picturesque Cayuga Lake. Northwest of Ithaca, New York, (home of Cornell University and Ithaca College) Taughannock Falls State Park is a popular destination for hiking in the Finger lakes region of Western New York. The mood of Taughannock Falls morphs with the seasons and rainfall.
