Description
Depictions of 'The Last Supper,' Jesus Christ's final meal with his disciples before his betrayal and crucifixion, abound in Christian liturgical art. The meal formed the core of a Christian sacrament (Ordinance to some Christian traditions) observed by most Christian traditions. Bread, broken and blessed represents Christ's body broken on the Cross for the forgiveness of sin. The wine, blessed and shared, signifying Christ's blood shed on the Cross for forgiveness of sin. Christian traditions debate styles of liturgical observance and detailed theological meaning of the Supper. Preferred terminology for this Christian observance are as varied the theological interpretations: Eucharist, Holy Communion, Mass, Lord's Supper, etc...
This stained glass depiction of the Last Supper graces a Lutheran Church in South Dakota. Jesus Christ is seated center front blessing the chalice of wine.
