Description
As a historian I love living history. The United States Army's 1st Cavalry Division Horse Detachment--Fort Hood, Texas--preserves the rich heritage and tradition of the American horse cavalry.
The 1st Cavalry Division was formed in 1921--headquartered at Fort Bliss--as the Army's first permanent cavalry division. Highly decorated the 1st Cavalry maintains a rich history of military service. Its many distinctions include "First into Manilla" (WW2), "First in Tokyo" (WW2), "First in Pyongyang" (Korean War), and "First into Cambodia" (Vietnam War). The "first in" distinction of the 1st Cavalry, beginning with Manilla, earned the division its nickname "First Team." World War II and modern advances in military combat led to transition of mounted units to dismounted infantry. In 1965 the 1st division--then headquartered at Fort Benning--became the Army's first "Airmobile" division. Moving to Fort Hood in the early 1970s the 1st Cavalry Division reorganized into a "Tricap" (Triple Capacity) Division with an armored brigade, air mobility brigade and air cavalry brigade.
The iconic ceremonial unit of the 1st Division--Horse Platoon and later the Horse Calvary Detachment--was established in 1972 shortly after the First Team's redeployment to Fort Hood. The Horse Detachment preserves the rich history of the American horse cavalry through demonstrations at military ceremonies and public events.
