Description
The B-24 Liberator flew over Europe in the final Allied push in World War 2. My uncle flew in a B-24 with the 489th Bomb Group in WWII, a 2nd Lieutenant and bombardier. The 489th, stationed at Halesworth Air Base (England) flew 106 operational missions in advance of, during and following D-Day (April-November 1944). The 489th’s first mission in the European Theater was 5/30/44 over Oldenburg, Germany and it’s final mission on 11/10/44 when the group returned to the USA for deployment to the Pacific Theater. Pete was training on the B-29 when the war ended. Pete enlisted in the Army Air Corp 7 December 1942; he sserved in the Air Force Reserve until 1972 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. I see this image and I see my uncle proudly serving his country.
