Description
Fort Davis stands as one of the best surviving examples of American military Indian Wars era southwest frontier posts. Nestled on the eastern edge of the Davis Mountains (Texas) Fort Davis operated from 1854 to 1871, passing briefly to Confederate hands during the Civil War. US military personnel were tasked with protecting travelers and commerce along the Trans-Pecos section of the San Antonio to El Paso Road and the Chihuahua Trail. The National Park Service cares for the fort today, offering visitors a look into life on the 19th century southwest frontier.
