Carlsbad Cavern is one of approximately 300 caves formed in the ancient reef that is now the Guadalupe Mountains of the Chihuahuan Desert. Carlsbad Caverns National Park preserves over 100 of those limestone caverns. The namesake Carlsbad Cavern is the best known of the parks caverns, boasting an incredible array of formations. The Natural entrance is an impressive opening, allowing visitors a steep descent into the cave. The steep Natural Entrance Trail leads visitors 1.25 miles and 750 feet below the surface to the Big Room. The cavern's Big Room is the single largest chamber in North America. Once in the Big Room tourists follow a 1.25 mile trail past the cave's most famous features. Once finished in the Big Room visitors may hike out via the Natural Entrance trail or take an elevator ride to the surface.
Carlsbad Caverns was established as a National Monument (1923) first then National Park in 1930 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
