Description
John Paul II served as pope from 1978 to 2005. The second pope elected in 1978 (John Paul I died after only 33 days in office), Cardinal Karol Józef Wojtyła took on the name of his predecessor. His tenure soothed tensions within the church following John Paul I's untimely passing. His pontificate was marked by a call to holiness. John Paul II's winsome personality connected deeply with the faithful around the world, particularly with Catholic youths. Upon his death in April 2005 a populist movement led to title "John Paul the Great." On April 27, 2014, John Paul II was canonized a saint, alongside John XXIII, in a St. Peter's Square ceremony led by Pope Francis I.
This image adds a quote from John Paul II emphasizing the love of Christ, a central theme throughout the papacy of John Paul II.
