Little Rock Central High School (originally Little Rock High School) opened the doors to its new, Art Deco style high school in 1927. The $1.5 million facility, designed by local architectural firm Wittenberg & Delony, was a point of civic pride.
In the segregated South, Little Rock Central educated the city's white students. Black students attended Dunbar Jr/Sr High School and in 1956 Gibbs High School. Following the 1954 USSC decision in Brown v. Board of Education striking down 'separate but equal' standards used to justify segregation in the South, Little Rock was forced to integrate Central High in 1957, but not without significant civil unrest. Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus, an avowed segregationist, utilized the Arkansas National Guard to stop black students from entering Central High School.
