Description
Pegasus has watched over downtown Dallas since first taking flight atop the city's first skyscraper in 1934. The Magnolia Building, a Beaux-Arts style building rising 29-stories above downtown Dallas. The building opened in 1922 as the headquarters for the Magnolia Oil Company. In 1934 Magnolia placed its red pegasus symbol atop its corporate headquarters. The company turned to Dallas-based Texlite to construct the 11-foot tall red neon flying horse. Visible from miles away and used as a way mark by pilots early in the growth of the airline industry Pegasus was embraced by the denizens of Dallas. That 'Flying Red Horse' now appears across Big D. The original Pegasus flew above the Magnolia Building until 1999; a new Pegasus took flight above the Magnolia in 2000. Developers of downtown Dallas's Omni Hotel launched a search for the original Pegasus, hoping to restore the neon winged horse and place it in the plaza outside the hotel. The iconic Pegasus was found in a storage shed near White Rock Lake, restored, mounted atop a 22-foot oil derrick, and placed in the heart of downtown Dallas.
