Description
The world's steepest cogwheel railway runs from Alpnach to the summit of Mount Pilatus. It is a spectacular ride into the Swiss Alps. Built in 1899 the Pilatus Bahnen climbs 1635 meters, over a 4618 meter track, at a maximum grade of 48%. The thirty minute ride to the summit carries trailers through pastoral alpine meadows to rugged peaks. The sights and sounds are pure Switzerland. Alpnach sits just outside Lucerne. The mountain railway's original steam train opened service in June 1899. The cogwheel system turned to electric over steam in 1937. All aboard for the ride of a lifetime.
