Description
Standing outside Bethlehem's Church of St. Catherine is a statue in memory of St. Jerome (347-420). A leading theologian, monastic, and translator in early Christianity, Jerome spent his final years in Bethlehem. His work translating the Latin 'Vulgate' contributed to his scholarly reputation and earned Jerome the title Doctor of the Church. Upon his death, Jerome's remains were laid to rest in a cave adjacent to the traditional site of Jesus' birth--just a few steps from this statue.
