Description
Sunrise over the Sea of Galilee at Tiberius, Israel. The Sea of Galilee and the surrounding Galilean villages and countryside providing the settings for many of the events in the life of Jesus as recorded in the New Testament.
Tiberius, with its modern resort hotels, is a popular lodging stop for pilgrims to the Holy Land. The city dates back to 20 CE when Herod Antipas established the city and named it for then Roman Emperor Tiberius. The city's loyalty to Rome spared it from destruction during the First Jewish Revolt. From the 2nd century CE to the 16th century CE, Tiberius played a critical role in Judaism--a center of Jewish political and religious thought. Following the Second Jewish Revolt and the expulsion of all Jews from Jerusalem in 135 CE, the Jewish Sanhedrin, having fled Jerusalem, eventually relocated to Tiberius around 150CE. Certain scholars believe the Mishnah and Jewish Talmud were complied in Tiberius by Rabbi Judah haNasi (c.200 CE). It is believed that Maimonides, renowned medieval rabbinical scholar, was buried in Tiberius.
