Description
"The Columns" stand as the iconic remains of Old Baylor in Independence, Texas. Founded in 1845, Baylor University is the oldest continuously operating university in the Lone Star state. Old Baylor's Female Department transitioned to Baylor Female College in 1866 (renamed the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in the 20th century).
Independence, TX, served as a major center of commerce and education in the early days of Texas. Sam Houston called Independence home in the 1850s. The fortunes of Independence changed when the railroad bypassed the city. In 1886 both schools left Independence. Baylor University moved to Waco; Baylor Female College settled in Belton.
"The Columns" serve as the backdrop for special student events for both Baylor University and UMHB.
