The Flatirons dominate Colorado's front range outside Boulder. The five massive slabs of conglomeratic sandstone, uplifted and titled on edge some 35 to 80 million years ago, are part of the Fountain Formation, which includes such iconic landmarks as Red Rocks and Garden of the Gods. Boulder's Chautauqua Park serves as the recreational gateway to the Flatirons. A typical day finds hikers and climbers, dog walkers and day dreamers enjoying the natural beauty of the Flatirons.
I love photographing the Flatirons and look forward to my visits to the Denver area. To me, the Flatirons respresent the rugged, mountain beauty of Colorado. They also remind me of spending the summer of 1969 with my family in Canon City while my father attended the University of Oklahoma's geology summer institute.
