Description
The Acropolis of Kavala, also known as the Fortress of Castle of Kavala, watches over the city and harbor. The byzantine fortress was completed in the early 15th century, built atop remains of the Byzantine Acropolis of Christoupolis (destroyed 1391). Updates to the structure were completed by the Byzantines, Venetians and Ottomans. The structure sits atop the peak of the Panagia peninsula. Kavala sits near the ancient city of Neapolis, where the Apostle Paul first set foot on European soil.
