Description
The Gol Stave Church now resides in Oslo's Bygdoy Park, a museum piece highlighting Norway's rich religious and architectural history. The church originally stood in Gol, Norway. Built around 1200 AD the church avoided destruction in the 1880s when a preservation group bought the ancient wood structure and presented it to King Oscar II, who had the church rebuilt in Oslo as part of Norwegian cultural heritage park. Not completely sure as to the original look of the church due to missing parts, restoration builders used Borgund's ornate stavkirke as a model for the Gol Church.
I love the look of this infrared image, highlighting the upper portion of the church. This image makes for a terrific reminder of travel in Norway and the country's rich history.
During the church's Catholic phase the interior would have likely contained ornate paintings of Christ and saints. The interior transitioned with the arrival of the Protestant Reformation in Norway.
