Description
The opening day of battle at Gettysburg (1 July 1863) swirled on the grounds of Schmucker Hall, Gettysburg Theological Seminary, on Seminary Ridge. Union officers tracked the movement of Confederate troops to the west from the buildings cupola. Union troops lost the high ground of Schmucker Hall by the close of day 1 at Gettysburg. As the battle progressed Schmucker Hall served as a hospital.
Gettysburg Theological Seminary (now Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg--LTSG) opened to students in 1810. Schmucker Hall was built in 1832. LTSG is the oldest, continuously operating seminary in the United States.
