Description
The old Dallas County Courthouse, overlooking Dealey Plaza, commands the attention of residents and tourists. Red Sandstone blocks, with rustic marble accents, provide 'Old Red' its distinctive color and nickname. The imposing Richardsonian Romanesque structure, built in 1892, once housed six grand courtrooms. Restoration work (2005-2007) breathed new life into Old Red's new appointment, The Old Red Museum of Dallas County History & Culture. Notable architectural features include the grand staircase, the Sumners Restored Courtroom, the rebuilt clock tower, and the 4 terra cotta acroteria (styled as wyverns--latin for serpent) perched atop Old Red. Old Red was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
