Description
East of Amarillo stand five vintage VW beetles, buried nose first in the ground at Conway, Texas, parodying the more famous Cadillac Ranch. The VW slug bugs, popular with tourists and budding graffiti artists, are a relatively recent addition to the historic Route 66 landscape. The Volkswagen slug bugs, set at 45 degree angles, appeared in 2002 with the hope of luring passing motorists to the adjacent Longhorn Trading Post and Rattlesnake Ranch. The businesses quickly failed, but the VW Slug Bug Ranch endured. Today, artsy (and not so artsy) travelers record their presence on the VW bugs and the surrounding abandoned buildings. The evolving graffiti-scape makes for a unique photo-op.
