Description
"The Columns" stand as the iconic remains of Old Baylor University in Independence, Texas. Founded in 1845, Baylor University is the oldest continuously operating university in the Lone Star state. Old Baylor's Female Department transitioned to Baylor Female College in 1866 (renamed the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in the 20th century).
Independence, TX, served as a major center of commerce and education in the early days of the Texas. Sam Houston called Independence home in the 1850s. The fortunes of Independence changed when by passed by the railroad. In 1886 both schools left Independence. Baylor University moved to Waco; Baylor Female College settled in Belton.
"The Columns" serve as the backdrop for special induction student events for both Baylor University and UMHB.
