Description
Marshall Fields and Company was Chicago's iconic department store. Christmas season was not complete without a visit to see the store's exquisitely decorated window scenes. Field's traces its roots to an 1839 dry goods store on Lake Street. Marshall Field's opened it's first State Street store in 1868, a magnificent marble-faced six story structure. The store burned to the ground during the Chicago fire, but not before store personnel frantically moved merchandise to a safe location as flames approached. The store would be up and running within a few weeks of the fire in a temporary location while the flagship State Street location was rebuilt. A second five-story building opened in 1875 only to fall victim to fire in 1877. The current, landmark seven-story State Street building opened in 1887. Purchase and consolidation of regional retail chains in the late 20th and early 21st century resulted in Field's renamed to Macy's on State Street.
